Canon Digital IXUS 500

Posted on Jun 11, 2004

Firstly, I’d like to thank the people who offered comments and advice on my questions about buying a new digital camera. It was much appreciated, and confirmed the feeling that I should be thinking small. As a result I ordered a Canon Digital IXUS 500 a couple of days ago and it arrived yesterday.

The camera itself cost £280 from cameras2u.com and I added a soft case for another £10. Delivery was free and took a couple of days. No problems with cameras2u.com so far.

The 32Mb card included with the camera holds about ten pictures in the high resolution superfine mode. The previously mentioned 256Mb card appears to hold around ninety - enough for most of my purposes.

The camera is easy to use, particularly in automatic mode. Switching to manual enables some extra options in the user interface and they seem to be clearly labelled, even if I don’t understand what they actually mean :-)

I’ve taken around seventy pictures in the first 24 hours, a couple of which are included below.

So far I’m happy, though a lot more experimentation will be necessary to get the best results I’m sure.
