Gmane

Gmane is a truly wonderful service. For those who have never seen it, Gmane was created by Lars Magne Ingebritsen to provide an NNTP interface to a huge number of mailing lists. Since starting the service, web-based reading of the archive, searching and RSS feeds have been added. Lars was also the chap behind the last major re-working of Gnus, which I use for several hours every day.

It’s good to see that some of the equipment necessary to run Gmane is paid for through web advertisements (Google Adsense it seems), especially as the advertisements are not particularly onerous or ‘in your face’.
