My only failure was that I removed the inner ring from the bottom of the mouse (upon which it normally slides around the table) rather than the outer ring. Don’t do this! The only way I could find to re-attach the inner ring was to cut the old joins off and glue it back on. You should only remove the outer ring, which initially doesn’t look as though it will budge.
